A health and fitness center with indoor sports for seniors would in my opinion be very beneficial to our aging population.

Facilities Planning Officer Comment 1.1 Project Coordinator 9 Jan 2012, 9:51 AM

It is proposed that Seniors programs will be run both in the sports hall and and the health and fitness area of the facility.

sharon Comment 2 20 Dec 2011, 1:02 PM

we really need some public swimming or at least hydrotherapy resources in ellenbrook and surrounds. my son requires pool work daily and we either have to drive to Craigie Leisure Centre or use Stateswim facilities - altone park pool is too cold and children are not allowed in the spas

I think it's not very proper to cut and paste a 'go check the FAQ' response, when a) most of us have already done this and b) many of us have actually included valid, reasoned arguments as to why the FAQ is both incorrect and an injustice when it comes to swimming pool representation in Ellenbrook.

If you have valid data - academic resources, and so on - that really implies why all the surrounding suburbs wouldn't flock to a local pool and it wouldn't see decent saturation, then by all means, we're interested in reading them. But to just point to a FAQ that's been read and understood and disagreed with by most of us is not engaging in discussion; that's trying to end it, without making a balanced argument as to why.

sharon Comment 2.2 11 Jan 2012, 5:12 PM

I have read the FAQ thank you. I disagree completely that the decision regarding funding for a pool for Ellenbrook is based on Ellenbrooks population alone without taking into consideration Aveley, Bennett Springs, Whiteman Edge, St Leonards, The Vines, Henley Brook all these areas would use a public pool and facilities based in Ellenbrook or surrounding areas. I hope everyone who believes we should get a pool in Ellenbrook gets in touch with both our local and state representatives regarding this

Facilities Planning Officer Comment 2.2.1 Project Coordinator 19 Jan 2012, 10:41 AM

Hi Sharon,

Thank you for your reply, I believe there is a small misunderstanding here. In the FAQ it refers to 'Ellenbrook Place' which includes Ellenbrook, Aveley, The Vines and part Henley Brook. The City does its planning using a 'place planning approach' - for more information please visit our website:(http://www.swan.wa.gov.au/Our_City/About_Swan/Place_Planning)

There has been some preliminary long-term planning regarding a regional complex to be located in Whiteman Park. A Leisure Centre (with a pool) has been flagged for this complex however I cannot provide an indication of timing at this stage.

Happy to discuss further.

Regards

Cameron Taylor

I live close to this proposed site and would definitely use this facility regularly for indoor sports. I, like many other Ellenbrook and nearby residents, would be very keen for a public swimming pool to be in this area also. I also have a school-aged child who would benefit from a play area here too.

Yes we need a pool it'll be great for elderly, disabled and children's swimming lessons!!! And swimming in summer for the people who don't have a pool! Altone pool is tiny especially when school lessons are on, and the water is far too cold...so i think the idea of this is fantastic but it wont be as good and it wont get used as much as it would unless it has a pool.

We need a public pool...... there is lots of families with children in Ellenbrook and it is only going to grow more. Having a pool close by will make the kids very happy

Jane Comment 6 20 Dec 2011, 2:32 PM

Like most people in Ellenbrook, I think a public swimming pool would be a great asset and very well patronised.

Currently the nearest public pool is in Beechboro, in the summer it gets very busy with swimming lessons and local people, so not much room there for us Ellenbrookians!!!

My husband likes to swim as a way to keep fit, at the moment we have to take swimming gear to work and use Altone park on the way home. I would also like to be able to take my two Grandsons for a swim and a play. As has been said before with the population in Ellenbrook and surrounding areas growing all the time I think it would be a positive.

ianhutch1 Comment 7 20 Dec 2011, 2:59 PM

Desperately need a pool Midland and Altone are too far away to get there regularly and for kids to swim seriously they need to be training a few times a week at least. Please everyone vote for a pool its a much needed resource which will give the centre regular visitors.

starcookies Comment 8 20 Dec 2011, 3:01 PM

I would love to see a public pool for swimming pool and a health and fitness centre.

Pia Comment 9 20 Dec 2011, 3:04 PM

I think it would be beneficial to have a lap pool with hydrotherapy and facilities for the elderly and the disabled, and those with chronic illnesses who are told that swimming is pretty much one of the only things they can do for recovery or to support themselves. My sister has Ankylosing Spondylitis of a severity that she was told swimming is the primary exercise recommended. With no local swimming pool (barring Stateswim, which isn't designed for such purposes), she finds it difficult to travel more than 15 minutes driving on a regular basis, especially with this condition.

We used the the Altone lap-pool for a whle, but we found it quite small and easily over-saturated with swimmers: I feel the Altone pool is really just designed for their local suburbs without also catering for Ellenbrook, Aveley, The Vines, Belhus, and Morgan Fields.

I strongly feel a local pool would be well-patronised. For my own health reasons (I am also at risk for Ankylosing Spondylitis), in terms of fitness, I am unlikely to use a recreation centre for anything other than swimming. However, I would definitely keep my eyes open regarding arts and culture and exhibition events. :)

KylieD Comment 10 20 Dec 2011, 4:58 PM

I would love to see this venue used for local competitions for both children and adult sports such as Netball, Basketball, Hard Court Volleyball. It could even be hired out once a month for YMCA Disco's...... Give our kids something to do with their time rather than hang around the shops or wondering the streets

Facilities Planning Officer Comment 10.1 Project Coordinator 9 Jan 2012, 9:58 AM

NESEC will be able to accomodate the mentioned sports plus soccer, hockey, badminton and more. It will also be available for hire.

andrew Comment 11 20 Dec 2011, 4:58 PM

The recurring trend on this forum is the need for a suitable sized swimming facility. By that I mean a 50m pool. No less.

I and many others have to go at great expense (inc carbon footprint) to pools in Bayswater and beyond to swim in a 50m pool. If this is to be a true local facility and the City of Swan are ACTUALLY interested in reducing the amount people use their cars and want to promote a healthy lifestyle then,do the community a favour. "If you build it they will come" ;)

Waterbaby Comment 12 20 Dec 2011, 6:33 PM

Both hands up for a decent sized swimming pool, my family would use it for swimming lessons and for a leisurely swim. A casual gym would be great as well. Also a good idea would be a fenced outdoor play area with soft flooring (no sand, big rocks etc like most parks in the area)

Facilities Planning Officer Comment 12.1 Project Coordinator 9 Jan 2012, 9:59 AM

Please refer to the FAQ section for information regarding your post about a swimming pool.

It is proposed that the chrildren services area will have both indoor and outdoor play areas.

One Stone Comment 13 20 Dec 2011, 7:22 PM

Heartily agree that all sectors of the community could benefit from this facility should it include a public pool. I would also be interested in Indoor Sports (ie Volleyball, Netball). Possibly it may have the potential to draw in the wider community for special events, performers and shows, for example the Playschool concert that tours annually to venues usually in Morley & the City.

Facilities Planning Officer Comment 13.1 Project Coordinator 9 Jan 2012, 10:02 AM

Please refer to the FAQ section for information regarding your post about a public pool.

There will be a wider range of indoor sports available both casually and in social competitions. The sports hall/exhibition space will be designed to cater for special events.

Leah Comment 14 21 Dec 2011, 12:06 PM

Ellenbrook really needs a public swimming pool, I have read on you Q and A that to have a leisure centre we need 75,000 people for an investigation into this and currently its estimated 45,000 people will be in Ellenbrook in 2021. I can't see how you need to have 75,000 in ONE area for us to qualify for 1 pool, its absolutely ridiculous. Ellenbrook needs to be come a self sustained community so we wont need to drive everywhere else out of our suburb to do things and shop elsewhere. We need to keep the money in our community.

So basically I would definately use a pool and Im sure every other resident would agree, indoor sports is a great idea also. I would really LOVE an indoor volleyball courts!! I think this would be fantastic for both young and old, its a great sport which wont put much strain on any ligaments as you are in soft sand and lots of fun!

Facilities Planning Officer Comment 14.1 Project Coordinator 9 Jan 2012, 10:04 AM

The facility will be able to accomodate indoor volleyball in the sports hall however it is not planned to accomodate for indoor beach volleyball.

tribell Comment 16 12 Jan 2012, 1:30 PM

I think a centre similar to that of Altone would be very beneficial and includes most of the facilites already requested. Please ensure there is PLENTY of parking as this seems to be an ongoing issues in Ellenbrook.

Brad Comment 17 14 Jan 2012, 9:38 PM

We need a tennis club

Deb Comment 18 18 Jan 2012, 10:52 AM

Health and fitness is a well needed part of all communities. I have two children and would like to encourage them to participate in sports not only in childhood but also as adults. Additional services for children, seniors also would be a welcome addition. A public swimming pool (even if you dont see it as a "sporting facility" - clearly it is) would be much needed. I believe there are many small rural areas that do not have your 75,000 population that have swimming pool facilities for their communities and they are well used. The local schools (which there are quite a few) in the area could well benefit from a pool as part of their sports programs.
